STATEMENT
I look for beauty in color, line and shapes and find it in the oddest of places. Without necessarily understanding why I’m attracted to a particular image or form, I take multiple photographs of it, from different angles, using different light settings, and then use those for reference to compose and frame the work in my studio. I do not want to just copy the figure; I try to highlight what I find interesting in it. I give myself permission to explore contrasts in color, light, shadow and line while preserving the honesty of the model.
BIO
Koren Volk was born in Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to New York in 1995. Volk picked up a paint brush after a successful Wall Street career, swapping her desk on a Wall Street trading floor for an easel in a studio in Sunset Park. It was the best trade she ever did!
Volk works predominantly in oil on canvas in a representational style. Her subjects range from traditional landscapes to single objects bathed in natural light. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
